    Vitamin B12, also called cyanobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that is considered part of the B complex of vitamins. B vitamins work in the body to maintain nervous system health, to support DNA synthesis, to support the conversion of food to energy, and more. Some B vitamins also support healthy looking skin, hair, and nails, and others play a role in healthy hormone production.

    Vitamin B12 affects the development of red blood cells, and supports their overall health and function. It also works to maintain nerve cell health and supports the production of DNA, RNA, and neurotransmitters. As a supplement, vitamin B12 may support healthy energy levels and a healthy mood. B12 is also taken to support memory health, maintain a healthy immune system, and along with B6 and B9, to support healthy levels of homocysteine. Homocysteine is an amino acid, and high levels have been linked to cardiovascular issues.

    B12 is generally found in a number of meats, including beef, chicken, and liver, as well as fish like trout, salmon, and haddock. Yogurt, cheese, and fortified cereals are also sources of B12. Typically, B12 doesn’t occur in plant-based foods, so if you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, you may choose to supplement your B12 levels in order support your health and avoid B12 deficiency.
