Get to Know Carrier Oils

If you’re an essential oil user, then carrier oils are an important part of your aromatherapy toolkit. Unlike the more volatile essential oils (meaning that that they evaporate quickly and contain both the scents and characteristics of their source), carrier oils are neutral, long-lasting when applied topically, and are derived from vegetarian sources. The oils themselves are typically extracted from the seeds, kernels, or nuts of a plant.

These fragrance-free oils form a base when diluting the highly concentrated essential oils; the term itself comes from their function of carrying the essential oils to the skin. These oils vary in color or consistency, and each offers different potential benefits so you can choose the oil that is best for your skin type. Many of these oils contain essential fatty acids to support your health, as well as vitamins and minerals that may promote overall health and wellness.

Most carrier oils are made from an extraction process known as “cold-pressing.” The seeds, nuts, or kernals are placed into a horizontal press with a rotating screw called the “expeller.” The oil is then squeezed from the nut, seed, or kernel, and is immediately filtered and bottled. Another extraction method is “hot extraction” which is similar to cold-pressing, but applies high heat during the process. It is generally believed that cold-pressing allows these oils to maintain a number of their nutrients, as well as potential benefits.

When selecting a carrier oil, it’s important to consider the purpose of the oil. If you’re using a carrier oil for massage purposes, a medium consistency is best, while lighter oils are perfect for facial use.
