More About ADHD and Natural Health Products

When a child experiences symptoms of hyperactivity, inattention and impulsiveness, it could mean many different things. Conventional medicine gives this large list of symptoms a label known as ADHD, in order to set standards for prescribing medications. However, the dopamine boost that these medications aim to give, is often not going to fix the root of the cause.

An inflammation imbalance caused by food allergies, antibiotic usage, yeast overgrowth, unhealthy gut flora, high toxicity levels (like lead and mercury) and nutrient deficiencies are all issues that might be causing ADHD-like symptoms.

It's important to see a functional medicine practitioner who can help you determine the exact cause for your child, since everyone's biochemical make up is unique.

Diet can play a major role in contributing to ADHD symptoms. When a child regularly consumes refined carbohydrates, sugar, sodas, juices, processed foods, etc., their glucose levels will seesaw and trigger fluctuations in their activity level, concentration, focus and behavior.

In addition, they're likely not absorbing as many essential nutrients as they need in order to function properly. Many nutrient deficiencies actually mimic ADHD symptoms.

Magnesium deficiency is one of the most common in kids labeled with ADHD. Excessive fidgeting, tantrums, social issues, restlessness, insomnia, irritability, aggressiveness, poor attention span, coordination issues and learning difficulties are some of the symptoms related to not having enough magnesium - an essential mineral.

Vitamin B deficiency is another one that causes symptoms like forgetfulness, short attention span, irritability, confusion and rage. While the entire family of B-complex vitamins are critical, B6 and B12 are vital to the development of the nervous system and production of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Essential fatty acid deficiency is another imbalance that leads to ADHD. Research has shown that kids with ADHD are not getting the amount of nutrients necessary for essential fatty acid conversion which results in low levels of EPA, DHA and AA. Foods like wheat and dairy are known to inhibit the conversion of essential fatty acids in the body.

A zinc imbalance can also interfere with neurotransmitter communication in the brain. Specifically those that affect behavior. Dr. Neil Ward, who studied kids with ADHD, found that there were much lower levels of zinc, calcium chromium and selenium in kids that were given antibiotics at least three times before the age of three.

Amino acid deficiency is also common among kids labeled with ADHD. DMAE, 5-HTP, L-thianin, tyrosine, theanine, taurine, glycine, GABA, L-Glutamine, serine and tryptophan have all been linked to mood and behavior. Without enough of them, people can experience irritability, depression, nervousness, anxiety, inability to focus, impulsiveness and hyperactivity.

The Vitamin D Council says 9 out of 10 people are deficient in Vitamin D, an essential vitamin that we can rarely get from food. D3 deficiency is another common one among kids with ADHD symptoms. D3 produces dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. It also helps produce enzymes and antioxidants responsible for good brain health and ability to focus.

After your practitioner helps you determine what's right for your child, Natural Healthy Concepts has a wide variety of quality supplements in this category that may help. Take a look around!
