More About Astragalus
Astragalus, which is also called Astragalus membranaceus or Milkvetch, is a perennial plant in the legume family. It is native to the northern and eastern parts of China, as well as Mongolia and Korea. Visually, it has hairy stems with clusters of small leaflets and somewhat resembles a pea plant. Astragalus has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years to support health. Typically, the roots of the plant are dried and made into a powder, or it is extracted and made into a liquid. It is also sometimes made into a tonic by boiling the dried root in water for an extended period of time.
Astragalus is considered an adaptogen, which is a plant that works to support a healthy response to stress. The term “adaptogen” was coined in the 1940s by pharmacologist Nikolai Lazarev. Plants that are considered adaptogens work to support healthy cortisol levels, which is a hormone involved in our stress response. Along with other adaptogens like ginseng, aswagandha, cordyceps, and more, astragalus works to support your health by promoting healthy aging. It also has antioxidant properties, so it works to protect cells from harmful free radicals.
