Selenium is a component of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, present in all cells. Selenium reduces the toxicity of lead, increases biliary excretion of cadmium and mercury and prevents cadmium toxicity impairment of Cyto-P450. Selenium deficiency increases the toxicity of numerous xenobiotics.*

Through these mechanisms, it is proposed that selenium exhibits a significant reduction in cancer risk when supplemented in populations of selenium deficient people. Soil levels and therefore food sources of selenium are decreasing; therefore, researchers predominately support selenium supplementation.*
