    Iodine to Support Thyroid Health

Iodoral from Optimix contains iodine and potassium iodide to help support thyroid health and function.

Iodine is a nutrient that is used in making thyroid hormones and regulating thyroid function. The thyroid secretes hormones that help to control the metabolism, or the way in which the body converts food to energy.

The thyroid may also be important in the regulation of mood.

Because of its role in promoting thyroid health, getting sufficient iodine may help to support

    • Healthy energy levels
    • Weight management
    • Cardiovascular health
    • Improved sleep

Iodine may also help to promote the health of the skin, hair, and nails. Too little iodine may result in the loss of hair.

Other potential benefits of sufficient levels of iodine may include support for

    • Reproductive health
    • Breast health
    • Immune health

Iodine may help to promote the health of the immune system in its role as an antioxidant.

    Recommended Use for Iodoral

Adults may take 1 tablet daily or as directed by a healthcare professional.

    Supplement Facts
    Each tablet contains:
    Total Iodine/Iodide 12.5mg (8333%)
    Iodine 5mg
    Iodide (as potassium salt) 7.5mg
Other Ingredients: microsole, a silica-based excipient containing a non-ionic surfactant, microcristaline cellulose, vegetable stearins and pharmaceutical glaze.

    Recommended Use:
Adults: Take 1 tablet per day or as directed by your physician. Work closely with your physician while on the Iodoral program. Report to your physician any history of thyroid surgery and/or radiation, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto), and any previous problem with your thyroid. Before starting Iodoral, your physician will order blood tests for hematology, blood chemistry and thyroid functions. He will also perform an ultrasound of your thyroid to measure the size and appearance of your thyroid.

Depending on the results of the thyroid function tests and ultrasound, he may order some blood tests for thyroid antibodies. If you are taking thyroid hormones, let your physician know about it. Be aware that Iodoral enhances the response of your body to thyroid hormones (4,6).

Subjects on Iodoral feel warmer in cold environments and that is expected. However, you will need to cut down the amount of thyroid hormones if you experience palpitation, anxiety, increased sweating and intolerance to heat. That is because Iodoral decreases your need for thyroid hormones. Your physician will guide you in titrating downward the amount of thyroid hormones. Your physician will reevaluate you one month afterward if you are on thyroid hormones, and 3 months if not. Keep a record of what you observe while on Iodoral and show it to your physician.

To test whole body sufficiency for iodine, 4 tablets of Iodoral are ingested, followed by 24 hr. urine collection. The more deficient a subject is in iodine, the more iodine is retained by the body and the least excreted in the urine. Sufficiency is achieved when 90% or more of the ingested amount is excreted in the urine.

In most subjects tested, 3-4 tablets of Iodoral/day were required to achieve whole body sufficiency within 3 months and the body retained approximately 1.5 gm iodine at sufficiency (4,8). The best response in patients with FDB was observed with ingestion of 2 tablets twice a day (8). Check with your physician for more information about the loading test.

    Potential Side Effects:
Ingestion of iodine and/or iodide has been associated with certain complaints. If you experience any of the following, stop ingesting Iodoral and contact your physician:

    • acne-like skin lesions in certain areas of your body
    • headache in the frontal sinus
    • unpleasant brassy taste
    • increased salivation and sneezing
    • If you experience any unusual symptom since starting on Iodoral, contact your physician.

I have been aware of cognitive decline for some time. I thought it was a combination of hard living and age. But since I began taking Iodoral a few months ago, my cognitive functions have improved greatly. It's like having the wisdom of age with the sharpness of youth.

Pros: It's inexpensive insurance, Can't hurt, helps your Thyroid
    Cons: I am no expet
    Recommended: Yes
I am by NO MEANS an expert on Thyroid, but since I have been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, I have been VERY concerned with the long term effects on my health. Since Iodine is needed by the body and the thyroid needs it, why not take it especially since I was diagnosed with a problem. Dr Brown recommends it and I respect his opinion. Just doing the best I can with the info I have. Iodoral price is reasonable.
