Echinacea is probably one of the most well known herbal supplements used to support the immune system. Most frequently, Echinacea is used to shorten the duration of a cold and lessen some of the cold related symptoms.

Propolis is a resinous substance collected by bees from conifer buds and poplar, and is used to seal their hives. Propolis has been found to have antimicrobial activity and has traditionally been used in folk medicine.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study was carried out on the efficacy of a syrup (Chizukit), in the prevention of respiratory tract infections in children during a 12 week winter period. 215 children, ages 1-5, were given the syrup, and 215 were given a placebo. 328 children completed the study, 160 in the syrup group and 168 in the placebo group. The children in the syrup group experienced fewer respiratory tract illnesses, the total number of illness days and duration was lessened. Children in the syrup group also had fewer days absent from day care, fewer unscheduled physician visits, and less nighttime cough.
