Default Is his sleep habit healthy or unhealthy?

My dad, now turning 75, sleeps in the afternoon from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM (2 hours). Then he sleeps at night, midnight to 6:00 AM (6 hours). Otherwise, he is quite active and alert, physically and mentally.

He says that he can only sleep for 6 hours at night the remaining 2 hours of needed sleep, he gets in the afternoon. Also, he says that this breaks his day into two, and makes the days more enjoyable and productive.

I am concerned about the natural cycles of sleep; he might be missing out the REM sleep, etc.

Are his habits, healthy or unhealthy?

Default What are the basic for general health?

Here is what I know. Please, answer and explain if you have a better suggestion;
1.Correct breathing and body gesture, you should count from 1to 6 while breathing in and 1to17 until you breath out. (After a while you will get use to it without counting the numbers).
2.Drinking about 4-8 gl*** of water per day.
3.Exercise. (Walking,).
4.Checking overall health. (Medical tests).
5.Prevention. Avoiding unhealthy drinks, food, and habits.
6.Eating variety of Healthy food.
7.Self-Realization/ Thinking at presents.
8.Enough sleeping.

These basics are certainly good. From a "healthy" food standpoint, one thing that can certainly help is to eat a variety of "colors" daily. Such as eating red, yellow, orange, green, purple fruits and vegetables to insure you are getting a variety of phytonutrients. Avoid white and brown foods which tend to be processed and offer less nutrient value.

While certain annual medical tests may be beneficial, it is even more important to pay attention to how you feel. For instance, realize that frequent headaches is a mechanism for the body to "complain" that something isn't right. The answer or problem is not an aspirin deficiency. It is more likely an imbalance caused by nutrient deficiencies and/or structural misalignment.

A new book came out called - The 100 Year Lifestyle (I think that is the title) by a chiropractor, Eric Plashkas (?). Much of it is common sense but sometimes reading something like that helps to affirm what we already know and clarify some points.

davidlee,
If your father is getting 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep, he should be getting some REM sleep. If you can, encourage him though to try to get some of his night sleep in before midnight. There is some speculation that sleep before midnight is more beneficial.
