Collagenex 2 is a patented ingredient containing collagen, glycosaminoglycans such as chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, and enzymes, which supports joints and connective tissue. There are many approaches to treating joint pain and stiffness. Whereas the long-term safety of analgesic drugs has not been established, complementary and alternative therapies tend to work slowly. Seniors and other populations take these products in the dosages required for improvement.

Initially two pilot studies were conducted to evaluate efficacy for the relief of pain and discomfort associated with joint and connective tissue disorders. Based upon the positive results from the initial studies, a follow up eight week randomized, multicenter double blind placebo controlled trial was conducted to evaluate relief of pain and stiffness associated with moderate osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee compared to a placebo. The primary treatment response endpoints were the 10, 30, and 60 day clinical assessments utilizing the WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster University) Osteoarthritis index. The version used in the study consists of five questions addressing the severity of joint pain, two questions addressing joint stiffness, and seventeen questions addressing function.

In the first clinical trial subjects were enrolled with various joint and connective tissue conditions. Results of the first clinical trial revealed the formula improved flexibility by 27.8 percent in seven days and at thirty days reduced general pain 104 percent, increased flexibility 43.7 percent, and range of motion pain was reduced 75.9 percent. Compliance was greater than 98 percent.

In a double arm pilot trial twenty-six subjects were enrolled with various joint and connective tissue conditions. Statistical analysis of the primary outcome measurements revealed that the formula produced a rapid treatment response for pain at seven days. The treatment response continued through 30 days for pain with 30.2 percent pain reduction.

In the placebo controlled trial a total of sixty-seven subjects were enrolled. An analysis for the primary outcome measurements revealed that supplementation with the formula yielded a 15.9 percent reduction in pain, a 12.8 percent reduction in mean stiffness after ten days of supplementation, which were maintained at 60 days.

To summarize, one third of patients experienced a greater than 30 percent pain reduction in 10 days. Nearly one third of patients experienced a greater than 50 percent reduction in pain in sixty days. On fourth of patients experienced greater than 50 percent reduction in stiffness in 10 days, and more than half of the patients experienced a greater than 50 percent reduction in stiffness in 60 days.
