Cell Guardian works to improve detoxification through several known pathways including: the cytochrome P-450 enzyme system, sulfation, methylation (lowering homocysteine levels), and glucuronidation. It also significantly raises glutathione levels, thereby preventing cellular and genetic damage. Estro-Clear/Cell Guardian creates water-soluble byproducts from lipid-soluble potential carcinogens that are much more readily eliminated from the body. Coupled with Estro-Clear/Cell Guardians known upregulation of apoptosis (cell suicide), it prevents abnormal cell proliferation through several known mechanisms.

Cell Guardian is also characterized by its ability to modify gene-behavior. Three mechanisms have been identified: (1) prevention of cell abnormalities, thereby creating more healthy cells, (2) aiding in DNA repair and neutralizing free radicals, and (3) inducing apoptosis of damaged cancer-prone cells. It regulates several important apoptotic genes and activating compounds including histone deactylase, p53, p21, Bcl-2, Bax, PTEN, AP-1, NFk- ß etc., all involved in cell suicide, thus preventing the activation of cancer cells. Estro-Clear/Cell Guardian modulates the 5-alpha-reductase mediated DHT (dihydrotestosterone) pathway often involved in prostate cancer and PCOS, primarily through the actions of DIM (diindolemethane). DIM also promotes healthier estrogen metabolism by preventing the receptor binding of "stronger" more stimulating estrogens. DIM induces Phase I and II enzymes involved in carcinogen metabolism. They shift metabolism to the 2-hydroxylation excretory pathway of estradiol and not the 16-a-hydroxylation excretory pathway, which contains 17-Keto metabolites that are more strongly estrogenic.

Calcium-D-glucarate is included for its detoxifying and anti-carcinogenic properties. These are attributed primarily to its ability to increase glucuronidation and the excretion of potentially toxic compounds. During Phase II detoxification, chemical carcinogens, steroid hormones, and other lipid soluble toxins are conjugated with glucuronic acid in the liver (glucuronidation), and excreted through the biliary tract. Selenium, which is an essential nutrient involved in hepatic detoxification, as well as a combination of folic acid, B12 and B6 that act as methyl donors and help restore the methylation pathways, are all critical to detox and cellular transcription. Oral N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) has been shown to increase the level of glutathione produced in the body, which is not only the cofactor of glutathione conjugation, but is also a major route for the detoxification of heavy metals.

The B vitamins: folic acid, B-12, and B-6, can function as critical cofactors for important enzymes involving estrogen conjugation and methylation.
