Toxins neutralized by the liver are excreted either via the kidneys or via the bile. Heavier toxins (molecular weight larger than 300) tend to favor biliary excretion. The excretion of cholesterol also takes place via the bile and cholesterol levels are partly regulated by bile flow.

It has been shown that herbs that are of greatest benefit to supporting bile production and its excretion are those that have choleretic and cholagogue properties. Some herbs have a combination of both of these properties.

Choleretics stimulate bile production by the hepatocytes while cholagogues stimulate the release of bile already formed in the biliary system.

Bile consists mainly of bile acids, cholesterol, phospholipids and bile pigments in an alkaline solution and is essential for proper lipid absorption. The amphipathic bile acids, both fat soluble and water soluble, function as detergents by decreasing the surface tension of fat.

A decreased surface tension increases the exposed surface area of the fat and the lipids are dispersed in the water phase. An emulsion of fat in water is formed. The emulsification of lipids permits the fat digesting enzymes, lipase, to digest a greater amount of fat.
